True Detective: Night Country unveils a new trailer starring Jodie Foster and Kali Reis ahead of its premiere early next year

Jodie Foster and Kali Reis were featured in a new preview for the HBO series True Detective: Night County released on Wednesday.

In the upcoming episode of the series, airing January 14, Foster plays Detective Liz Danvers, while Reis plays Detective Evangeline Navarro.

“As the long winter night falls in Ennis, Alaska, the eight men who operate the Tsalal Arctic Research Station disappear without a trace,” HBO said in a synopsis of the upcoming season.

It continued: “To solve the case, (Detectives Foster and Navarro) will have to confront the darkness they carry within themselves and delve into the ghostly truths buried beneath the eternal ice.”

The upcoming season will be set in Alaska over a 24-hour night period, with the first all-female duo tackling the case.

In the opening of the clip, Navarro asks Danvers if she ever wants to just disappear from the area and “just walk out” and “never stop.”

Danvers tells Navarro that “this is Alaska – no one ever really leaves.”

In one frame, another member of law enforcement is seen commenting on the unlikely tandem: “I don’t know what they’re doing together – I thought they hated each other.”

The two investigators are seen brushing aside past disagreements and working together to solve the gruesome crime in the cold, with Navarro confronting Danvers at one point about withholding information.

The upcoming season also features John Hawkes, Christopher Eccleston, Fiona Shaw, Finn Bennett, Isabella Star LaBlanc, as well as Anna Lambe, Aka Niviâna, June Thiele, Diane Benson and Joel D. Montgrand.

Issa López is the creative force behind the upcoming season, as she is the showrunner, and wrote and directed the six episodes of the crime mystery series.

“We are extremely excited to return to the True Detective franchise and to work with the multi-talented Issa López,” said HBO President Francesca Orsi.

The series returns to HBO for the first time in four years and marks the first frame since HBO and True Detective creator Nic Pizzolatto formed their partnership, with Pizzolatto staying on as producer.

The Night County season was initially scheduled to air this year but was postponed until January due to the WGA strike, HBO CEO Casey Bloys said at the Code Conference on Wednesday: Deadline reported.

“We posted it in January because I wanted to make sure we had Issa and Jodie Foster available to talk about it,” Bloys said, referring to union rules that prohibit promoting projects while a strike is in progress.

True Detective: Night Country airs January 14 at 9/8c on HBO.
