True crime fanatics flock to Gilgo Beach suspect’s house during new police search to share gruesome theories about Rex Heuermann
True crime buffs flocked to the home of Gilgo Beach suspect Rex Heuermann and shared their theories about the gruesome crimes as police searched it again.
Lori Mattza of Chicago was so excited when she saw Heuermann’s home in Massapequa Park that she accidentally drove her rental car straight through the crime scene.
‘I drove straight to the house. “I didn’t know I wasn’t allowed to go,” she said, a little confused. “I was trying to get video for my True Crime YouTube channel.
Mattza said it took her hours to drive from downtown Manhattan to Long Island after dropping off her daughter at her new job and dealing with holiday traffic.
“My husband doesn’t know I’m here and I might miss my flight tonight, but oh god, yes, it was worth coming out.”
She compared Heuermann to infamous serial killer John Wayne Gacy and said she believes there are more victims than the four Heuermann is accused of murdering.

“I think there are body parts buried in the house and I think he’s planting them on a wild goose chase to get all the little trophies he left behind,” she said.
True crime junkie Nick Greystone, who spoke to DailyMail.com last summer when Heuermann was first arrested, was in the area again this week, “twice,” he said, since police served a second search warrant.
‘I was shocked that they came back. What could they possibly have found? And we don’t know what might be going on with the case.’
The musician and podcaster said, “I feel like there must be something meaningful about coming back to a crime scene that’s basically closed. The family lived here for ten months.’
Lauren DeFranco rode away from Port Washington despite a broken foot.
“I wanted to come out and see what they took out of the house and where they were looking. What they are looking for and what kind of new evidence emerges.
Around her ankle, which was wrapped in a bandage, DeFranco walked carefully, assessing the scene: “They’re setting up tents. They are clearly looking for something specific.’
The former Channel 7 news journalist recalled being at the news conference that former Suffolk County Police Chief Richard Dormer gave when he first announced the Gilgo Beach serial killer more than a decade ago.
“I remember him saying we don’t want anyone to think there’s a Jack Ripper out there,” she said.
DeFranco stumbled past the barricades that had been set up, sharing her theory on the case and wondering why the search crews are back after all this time.
“I think someone’s talking,” she said. ‘You always hear about a prison snitch or someone who might be involved in the crime. We don’t know yet at this point.
She added: ‘The lawyers say the family are stunned but we can only take that for what it’s worth.
“We don’t want to victimize a victim, but we also don’t know what happened in this house over the last 20 years.”
Rob Palomba and Dana Gerasimovich drove by the block to catch a glimpse of Heuermann’s home sometime after 6:30 PM on Friday, by which time search crews were long gone.

They rolled down their windows and told DailyMail.com: ‘We’ve just bought a house and now everyone is searching in their house again.’
“A little scary,” Dana said.
“It doesn’t bother me that much,” Rob added. ‘We closed about a week and a half ago and a few days after that the police are back at the house,
“My mom looked at me and said that house is about two minutes away from where you just bought.”
He laughed. ‘We are happy to be here. Nice time.’
Heuermann’s alleged victims are Melissa Barthelemy, Megan Waterman, Amber Costello and Maureen Brainard-Barnes.
Police officers and true crime investigators fear he may have murdered 11 women between 1996 and 2011 before dumping their bodies on the lonely beach that gave the crimes their name.
Heuermann was arrested in July 2023 and remains in jail awaiting trial.
