- Renny Quow’s shoe slipped as he rounded the bend in the 4x400m relay series
- He kept running and finished ahead of 16-year-old American Quincy Wilson
- Botswana and Great Britain finished top two, while the US finished third
Trinidad and Tobago sprinter Renny Quow lost one of his shoes during the men’s 4×400 meter relay heat at the Games.
The 36-year-old started well and briefly led the first stage before being overtaken.
As Quow rounded the bend, one of his running shoes came running towards him. However, he didn’t stop and kept running before passing the baton.
Former Team GB athlete Denise Lewis said in an interview with the BBC: ‘You’ve got to keep going and it reminds me a bit of Bryan Whittle back in the day when he was running the 4×400 and his shoe came off, but yeah, it’s the team.’
Despite being behind, Quow still managed to beat 16-year-old American Quincy Wilson, who had an Olympic debut to quickly forget.

Wilson finished second to last in the United States, after completing a first stage time of 47.3 seconds.
So Vernon Norwood, Bryce Deadmon and Christopher Bailey had to make up ground to qualify for the final.
They did so, but it was not until the final stage that Bailey managed to join the top three and thus secure a safe passage to the big podium.
