Newcastle United, Chelsea and Everton have led the football world’s tributes to Christian Atsu after their former player was found dead following the devastating earthquake in southern Turkey.

The 31-year-old man had been missing since the magnitude 7.8 earthquake that struck in the early morning hours of February 6, but one of his officers has confirmed that his body has been discovered under the rubble.

There were initially hopes that the Ghana international had been bailed out, but his club Hatayspor and his agent Nana Sechere revealed the claims were untrue.

Sechere confirmed the heartbreaking news that Atsu’s body had been found, and the officer offered his condolences to his family.

“It is with the greatest regret that I have to announce to all supporters that Christian Atsu’s body was unfortunately recovered this morning,” Sechere tweeted.

Our thoughts are with his family, friends, colleagues at @Hatayspor_FK and all those affected by this tragic event that has claimed so many lives.

Hatayspor confirmed that Atsu’s funeral will take place in Ghana, with the Turkish club describing him as a “beautiful person”.

“The funeral of our footballer Christian Atsu who lost his life under the rubble (rubble) is on his way to be sent to his hometown Ghana,” Hatayspor wrote.

Atsu was scheduled to fly in from southern Turkey hours before the quake hit, but the Hatayspor manager said on Friday the Ghanaian had opted to stay with the club after scoring the game-winning goal in a Super Lig match on 5 April. February.
