Trent Alexander-Arnold has insisted Liverpool can win the league title this season.

The England international believes his team’s summer signings, combined with increased determination, provide the perfect foundation for a title challenge.

Jurgen Klopp’s side are second, one point behind leaders Manchester City, as the two heavyweights prepare for a big clash on Saturday.

The full back told the Guardian: ‘Our goal as a team is to win the competition and that is the goal again this season.

‘Last season wasn’t good enough. Last year we weren’t nearly good enough to even come close to that and that’s what we had to do something about this year.

‘We have brought in new players; it was about adapting as quickly as possible and making sure we laid a good foundation at the start of the season.

‘We are in a very strong position and are doing enough in terms of results and form to stay as close to the top of the rankings as possible.

‘The league hasn’t been won yet, there are still a lot of games to play but so far we have performed in the way you would expect someone who can win the league to perform and if we continue this we should be in May and must be round.’

The Reds last won a league title in the 2019/20 season and since then City have won three in a row.

This summer, Liverpool added Dominik Szoboszlai from RB Leipzig to their squad for £60 million, as well as Alexis Mac Allister from Brighton for £35 million.

They also signed Bayern Munich midfielder Ryan Gravenberch for £34 million and Wataru Endo from Stuttgart for £17 million.
