Avalon freak accident: Terrifying moment tree smashes through Sydney family’s home on top of their sleeping baby

A family has recalled the terrifying moment a huge tree crashed through their roof into their baby boy’s crib as he slept.

The near-disaster during a wild storm at Avalon on Sydney’s northern beaches last week was captured on little Ned’s baby monitor.

Keisha Ferguson and her husband Matt feared the worst when they ran to their nine-month-old’s bedroom.

It only took 40 seconds to reach Ned, but it was the longest 40 seconds of their lives.

The panicked mother could be heard shouting: ‘Oh my God! My baby, are you okay?’

The Ferguson family (pictured) are still in shock after the terrifying event when a tree crashed through baby Ned’s bedroom during a wild storm

“I distinctly remember pulling tile after tile but I couldn’t reach him and I was screaming a bit,” Ms Ferguson said. 7News.

Incredibly, Ned was not injured in the bizarre incident, much to the relief of his parents.

“It’s surreal to think we were in there… and it all happened so quickly and the sound of the tree falling… there was just no warning,” Ms Ferguson recalled.

“You think your kids are in a safe place, and we just innocently put our kids to sleep, like everyone does every night, and to think it could just happen like that… there was no warning that it could just happen in one piece fell on top of us.”

Amazing footage from the monitor showed the moment the tree crashed through the ceiling, destroying Ned’s bed and bedroom, followed by his mother’s terrified screams.

“We didn’t even know what it was at the time… but when you look back at the footage you see how close it was,” Ms Ferguson said.

A week later, the family of four said they were told to buy Lotto tickets after their incredible survival story.

“He’s a little wonder boy… he was just fast asleep, so happy,” Mrs Ferguson said.

Ned has yet to return to his bedroom to sleep.

But the family hopes that one day it will feel like home again.

“If you look at where we stood in that room, it’s a miracle we all came out with a few scratches,” Ferguson said.
