Former youth hockey player Travis Kelce really enjoyed watching Chicago Blackhawks rookie Connor Bedard play. Just don't ask him to say his name.
Kelce – who plays an occasional role as a starting tight end for the Kansas City Chiefs – still keeps an eye on the sport he played as a youngster.
Speaking to his brother Jason on the New Heights podcast, the siblings attempted to put together a hockey team made up entirely of NFL players.
Kelce suggested putting now-retired tight end Rob Gronkowski between the pipes because he saw him play there once.
The Chiefs star also mentioned his jealousy when he saw 'Gronk' take the crease for the Tampa Bay Lightning and hopes to do the same for another NHL team.
Travis Kelce says he would like to strap on some pads and step into the net for the Blackhawks
He also praised their young rookie Connor Bedard, but couldn't pronounce his name properly
The Blackhawks offered him to join them and advised on Bedard's name
“I think he did something with the Tampa Bay Lightning and he was in net for a workout or something like that,” Kelce recalled.
'I got a little jealous. I want to do it now. I want to attack the Blackhawks and get in the net or something.”
Well, Chicago responded – at least publicly – by telling the star “our house is your house @tkelce!”
Moments later, Kelce said he really enjoyed watching Bedard — Chicago's top pick — but called him, “Connor Benard… Bendard… I don't even know how to say his last name, I just enjoy watching it . play.'
The Blackhawks offered a solution on their Twitter account: “you can just call him Bedsy.”
Kelce played hockey as a kid and grew up in Northeast Ohio — even going so far as to have a page on the sport's youth tracking site EliteProspects.
Bedard has had a strong start in the NHL, leading all rookies in points with ten goals and eight assists in 21 games.
But last night the Blackhawks were badly beaten by the rival Detroit Red Wings and the rookie's anger got the better of him: he slammed his stick into the boards.
