NFL legend Eli Manning has backed Travis Kelce’s decision to spend his bye week with Taylor Swift during her Eras tour in Buenos Aires – despite a backlash from some sections of the football fan base.

On Thursday, Manning, 42, said this PEOPLE those bye weeks were intended to get away from football and give players the chance to recharge for the rest of the season.

“I think if he travels, there’s nothing wrong with traveling, going somewhere,” Manning said. “Hey, if he wants to go support his girlfriend and see her play a concert, I have no problem with that.”

Kelce’s romance with the 12-time Grammy-winning pop star has been America’s favorite love story since it was published in September. After attending both home and away games for Kelce, the Kansas City Chiefs tight end is overseas to support Swift back in her record-breaking tour.

However, on social media, some fans shared their concerns, insisting that the NFL superstar should focus on the second half of the Kansas City Chiefs’ season as they aim for back-to-back Super Bowl wins.

Manning emphasized that bye weeks are “not a time to go partying and celebrating,” citing Las Vegas as an example, before revealing that he spent the week off visiting his university and visiting family.

Manning also reiterated that Kelce’s decision to see Swift in Argentina is harmless.

“I think the bye week is a good time to get away from football and I think that’s the idea,” Manning said. “It’s the time to rest the body, give the mind a little rest, recharge yourself to prepare for the second half of the season.”

All 32 teams in the NFL get a bye week each season. The Chiefs’ short break comes on the heels of starring in the fourth international NFL game this year in Frankfurt, Germany.

Swift kicked off the South American leg on Thursday, but then had to cancel Friday’s show

The Chiefs took care of business in Europe, beating the Miami Dolphins 14-21 on Sunday. With his team sitting comfortably at a 7-2 record, Kelce made a quick pit stop in the United States before boarding a private jet to North America.

Swift kicked off the South American leg of her sold-out Eras Tour show on Thursday evening and was scheduled to play the second of three consecutive shows on Friday.

However, the bad weather took care of that, as the pop superstar revealed on social media on Friday afternoon that – due to the bad weather – she had to postpone tonight’s show at Estadio River Plate.
