Travis Kelce clashes with brother Jason over controversial Patrick Mahomes moment

Travis Kelce and brother Jason clashed over an extended Patrick Mahomes run that sparked controversy during the Kansas City Chiefs’ win over the San Francisco 49ers.

Quarterback Mahomes broke away for an impressive 33-yard run late in the third quarter against the 49ers on Sunday, which was a repeat of last season’s Super Bowl.

But those watching quickly claimed that Mahomes appeared to suggest he was going out of bounds, forcing defenders to slow down and avoid hitting him.

However, Mahomes then stepped inside a defender and continued to run down the sideline for additional gain.

Defensive players know that hitting a player as he leaves the court is an immediate 15-yard penalty, making them afraid to do so.

While discussing the moment on the latest episode of their New Heights podcast, Jason suggested Mahomes knew what he was doing.

Travis furiously disagreed, pointing out that Chiefs running back Kareem Hunt shoved the defender closest to Mahomes so he couldn’t make the tackle even if he wanted to.

Jason said, “He (Mahomes) had the longest run of his career, a 33-yard run down the sideline at the end of the third quarter, where, if we’re being honest, he used his quarterbackness to his advantage.”

Travis immediately hit back, “Man, get out. Look again. Kareem pushes the guy out of bounds.

“Look again, Kareem is literally standing there, moving away, he sees 53 pushing him, he loses his balance and then gets in 90’s way. I’m trying not to hear this man.’

Jason replied, “Okay, okay, easy. Okay, hit, hit, okay. I’m sorry! I didn’t see the pressure.’

Travis responded, “I hear what everyone is saying. Some quarterbacks certainly benefit from that.

“I think Pat has been pretty solid and when he gets out of bounds it’s because he can’t get any more yards with his legs. He does not try to deceive anyone who goes beyond the limits. I just don’t see Pat doing it.

“He never looked like he was going out of bounds. But I hear what everyone is saying, I get it. Sometimes quarterbacks are protected on the sideline and that can make guys play cautiously and not try to take his head off.”

It was said that Mahomes appeared to go out of bounds, meaning defenders can’t hit him

Mahomes overcame two interceptions and made some big plays with his feet as the Chiefs remained the only undefeated team in the league, defeating the 49ers 28-18.

The Chiefs rushed for a season-high 184 yards and had four touchdowns on the ground for the first time since the 2018 playoffs against Indianapolis.

The defense did the rest with three interceptions against Brock Purdy and the 49ers on a day when Mahomes passed for his second-fewest yards ever in a game in which he was left uninjured.

About the game, Travis said, “It’s hard to call it a Super Bowl rematch, there are different guys.

“We had a lot of guys on our team that didn’t play in the Super Bowl. It was a difficult game, a dirty game. Kareem Hunt is going downhill, my man Carson Steele.

‘It started slowly for us, but eventually I felt some confidence, playing together and taking responsibility. I found a way to score some touchdowns.

“That was the biggest thing we went into that game as an offense – when we get in the red zone, enough of these field goals – even though we love Harry (Butker) and he’ll make some big field goals for us again this year – but let’s put up some touchdowns, man.”
