Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid plans to rest some of his starters this weekend against the LA Chargers, although he has yet to decide if Travis Kelce will be one of them.

The Chiefs head to LA on Sunday for their final regular-season appearance, having already clinched the No. 3 seed in the playoffs following last weekend's 25-17 win over the Cincinnati Bengals.

As a result, Reid has already confirmed that star quarterback Patrick Mahomes will be rested ahead of their playoff campaign, and on Friday he revealed that four more starters will not play.

Wide receivers Rashee Rice and Kadarius Toney, offensive tackle Donovan Smith and cornerback L'Jarius Sneed are all inactive to complete the Chiefs' regular season while dealing with minor injuries, but there was no word on whether Kelce's legs are also will be saved.

Despite training being limited on Wednesday and Thursday due to a neck issue, Reid said no final decision has been made on whether Kelce will suit up against the Chargers at So-Fi Stadium.

When the Chiefs coach was recently asked about the players who came close to the milestone against Los Angeles, Reid said it “depends” on what the performance is.

Then a reporter asked directly about Kelce's chances for an eighth consecutive 1,000-yard season. “We'll see how that all goes,” he said.

Reid added that talks about playing in Week 18 for players are “one-sided.”

The decision to rest Mahomes gives backup quarterback Blaine Gabbert, 34, the opportunity to start his first Chiefs game after joining them this offseason.

So far, he's only made a few appearances in Week 3, filling in for Mahomes when he suffered an injury against the Chicago Bears.

In previous years, Reid has gone with his backups when there was nothing left to play for, including a 38-21 loss to the Chargers after already going No. 1 in 2020.

Mahomes also made his first start as a Chiefs quarterback when Reid shook up his Pack on the final day of the 2017 season in Denver after sealing the No. 4 seed with first-round pick Alex Smith.

It has become more common in the NFL during the final week of the regular season to draft key players among teams whose playoff fates have already been determined.

The Baltimore Ravens will battle MVP favorite Lamar Jackson this weekend, while the AFC's No. 1 seed is locked down this weekend.

The Denver Broncos know they won't make the playoffs, so if Russell Wilson doesn't play, his career with the team will effectively end.
