- They were told that the store only serves boys
- The incident left the teen’s family ‘disgusted and angry’
A transgender teen has claimed their local barber shop refused to help them because it “only serves boys” – leaving their family “disgusted and angry”.
The 15-year-old, who was born female but is transitioning to male, visited the store in Murraylands, in regional South Australia, last month and asked for a “masculine style” trim.
However, they claim the stylist told them the company only catered to boys and men, leaving them feeling “alienated” and on the verge of tears.
The teen’s furious family, who did not want to be identified, closed the barber shop and are now demanding an apology.
The teenager has been visiting the barbershop for three years without any problems, but said it had recently changed hands and their usual barber was not present at the time of the altercation.

“I felt quite alienated,” the teen said the Advertiser.
It was clear discrimination. She refused to serve me because of how I looked and the fact that I was not a man.
“When I told her the haircut was for me, she said she wouldn’t. After she told me to hold back my tears. She told me her boss told her not to cut girls’ hair – the shop is for boys only.’
The 15-year-old said they were shocked to learn that discrimination still occurs today, saying that hairdressers should be available to people of all genders.
The teen’s mother called the incident “absolutely disgusting.”
She revealed that they had to travel to another city instead to give her kid a haircut, saying she felt like they were living in the “dark ages.”
