Tragedy when Melbourne air traffic controller is hit and killed by a ‘speeding’ driver
A traffic controller was fatally hit by a car during work on the highway in Melbourne.
The man had parked his car on the Eastern Freeway’s outbound lanes when the accident happened.
Emergency services rushed to the scene near Hoddle St at 12:15 p.m., where a damaged car and toppled safety cones were still present.
The traffic controller was taken to hospital but later died, Victoria police said.
The 58-year-old traffic controller was reportedly hit by a 27-year-old driver in a Toyota sedan. The driver, who was not injured, was taken to hospital and subsequently arrested by police.
Police suspect speed played a role.
“The Eastern Freeway is expected to be closed for some time while investigators investigate the scene of the accident,” Victoria Police said.
Anyone with dashcam footage or information about the crash is urged to contact Crime Stoppers.
