Trader Joe’s customer notices common scam: ‘Always check your receipts!’

A TikTokker is accusing Trader Joe’s of intentionally charging her for shopping bags when she uses her own reusable bag to carry her groceries.

Callie from California is convinced that the popular supermarket chain regularly carries out this scam in order to extort some extra money from customers.

In a minute-long video she posted to TikTok, Callie claims the charge for the bag, which appears last on her receipt, is a deliberate attempt by Trader Joe’s to rip off customers.

Callie says she even brought her own reusable bags from Trader Joe’s to avoid the fee, but was still charged 10 cents twice.

A TikTokker is accusing Trader Joe’s of intentionally scamming customers by charging them to pick up grocery bags, while she uses her own bag to shop for groceries.

The TikToker suggests that the bag fee, which is the very last item that appears on her receipt, is a deliberate way for Trader Joe's to steal extra money from their customers.

“I thought I was being childish and talking myself out of this, but no, I know this happens to so many people,” Callie began in the video that has been viewed more than 8,000 times.

“You see that baggage fee? I know it’s only 10 cents, but how many times a week do they charge me baggage fees?” she asks.

“Trader Joes, I love you guys, but… if you’re like me and you leave your receipt in your bag… I don’t always look at my receipt, but what is that? And what am I going to do about it?”

People who responded online seemed to understand her situation.

“If you bring your own bags, they shouldn’t charge anything for them,” one user wrote.

“Bags are the most profitable product in a supermarket,” said another commentator.

Callie said she will bring the issue to the attention of her store executives.

“I’m going to talk to the manager and politely suggest that it’s an automated response on the register and then I’ll move on. Hopefully I’ll get a gift card, but think how much extra they’re making per day by doing that?”

“Oh no! I’ll check my receipt, I’ll just go and tell the cashier not to charge any baggage fees because I always take my bags with me,” another indignant customer exclaimed.

One commentator even did the math: ‘If a person goes out 5 times a month, that’s $12 a year… A PERSON – think about HOW MUCH MONEY THAT MAKES FOR HIM IN THE US PER YEAR.’
