Toyota recalls more than 1.8 million RAV4 vehicles

Toyota is recalling more than 1.8 million RAV4s, the company announced on Wednesday.

Specifically, it is recalling certain vehicles from model years 2013-2018.

At issue is the fire risk of some replacement batteries, Toyota said in a statement. Because some replacement batteries in the SUV are not the correct size, they can shake loose and cause a fire when the car makes a sharp turn.

“Some replacement 12 volt batteries of the size specified for the subject vehicles have smaller top dimensions than others. If a battery with a small top is used as a replacement and the terminal clamp is not properly tightened, the battery may move when the vehicle is driven at high speeds,” Toyota said. “The movement could cause the positive battery terminal to come into contact with the terminal and cause a short circuit.”

Toyota said it is working on a solution that would replace the battery terminal, battery box and positive terminal cover at no cost to owners. They will be notified in December.

Toyota said people with affected vehicles can enter the vehicle information number or license plate information on the website Toyota website or the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration recall website.
