Jamie Carragher: ‘Crowd won’t take Spurs anywhere tonight’
Jamie Carragher, former Liverpool defender, on Sky Sports:
As soon as that whistle blows, you (as a player) give everything in that game. But what won’t happen is that the crowd won’t take them anywhere tonight. If Spurs get anything out of this match, it will be all on them.
City on a roll
Manchester City are really enjoying life at the moment.
To be honest, they don’t really get homesick, especially at this time of year.
Pep Guardiola’s side have won four away games in the Premier League on the trot, scoring 10 goals in the last three combined without conceding a single one.
But as we will discuss in more detail later, they are not always keen on a trip to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
Can they continue their good form tonight?
What atmosphere do we get?
So the fans are starting to arrive at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
I’m curious to see what kind of atmosphere there will be tonight, given the predicament Tottenham fans find themselves in.
Many season ticket holders couldn’t even bear the thought of turning up tonight and sent their tickets back to the club.
It means there could be a lot of empty seats in the stadium tonight, which is a rarity.
It’s such a strange situation…
Jamie Carragher: ‘Spurs fans should not want their team to win tonight’
Jamie Carragher, former Liverpool defender, on Sky Sports:
I can’t wait for it to start, just to see what the atmosphere is like. This isn’t unique, it’s happened before, but I don’t think any Spurs fan should want their team to win tonight.
I grew up in a city with a similar rivalry and if the shoe were on the other foot I think the Arsenal fans would be exactly the same.
Should Spurs fans want to win?
I think Ange Postecoglou has made his opinion on this subject very clear…
But what do you all think?
Personally, I can understand the Spurs fans’ fear, but I feel that when the game gets going, their will to win will diminish their hatred of Arsenal.
Let me know your thoughts in the comments.
Ange Postecoglou: ‘I will never understand if someone wants their own team to lose’
Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou speaks on Monday:
I understand the rivalry, I was part of one of the biggest in the world in recent years with Celtic and Rangers. But I will never understand when someone wants their own team to lose.
That’s not what sports is about. That’s not what I like about the game. What I especially love is the competitiveness, challenging yourself to beat someone and come out successful. Everything beyond that has nothing to do with sports.
If other people want to deal with it in such a way that they take pleasure in the misery of others, then that is not how I have lived my life and how I perceive my role. My role is to deliver success to this football club and I know that 100 percent of Spurs supporters want us to win, be successful and win trophies. By winning we can make 100 percent of Spurs supporters happy.
Conflicting emotions for Spurs
Did Tottenham fans ever think they would be in this position?
It feels like the majority of their fanbase desperately wants them to lose tonight. If they win, they could put Arsenal in pole position in the title race that goes into the final day.
It doesn’t take a genius to tell you that Spurs hate the Gunners, so it makes this a very awkward situation for them.
A Spurs fan told me they don’t ‘hope’ they lose, they ‘would love to lose’. I think that statement captures the conflict perfectly.
Most Tottenham supporters would agree with this statement, but not all.
Another fan told me they want a Spurs win despite not wanting Arsenal to win the league because they support their team and ‘City have to do it on their own’.
What’s at stake?
So we know that the title race will last until the last day.
However, that doesn’t mean today won’t be a decisive factor in where the Premier League trophy ends up.
After Arsenal’s win at Old Trafford on Sunday, the Gunners are one point ahead in the table.
A Tottenham win, or even a draw, means Arsenal top the final day. Meanwhile, a win for City means they move two points clear and are on course for a record fourth successive Premier League win.
Can Spurs help their bitter rivals’ title claim?
This is simply a situation that all Spurs fans wanted to avoid.
If Tottenham beat Manchester City tonight, their north London rivals, Arsenal, will go into the final day one point ahead of the Citizens at the top of the Premier League.
There is no doubt that the Gunners fans will only support Tottenham for one night, their fate is in their hands.
Or is it? We have to remember that City now look unstoppable, while Tottenham are far from their best form.
Even if Spurs make a fight tonight, it doesn’t guarantee they will be able to topple Pep Guardiola’s big team.
If they do, they will have done their greatest enemies a huge disservice.
‘Title decider’ at Tottenham
It is perhaps the most important night of the season.
The build-up to tonight’s match between Tottenham and Manchester City has been bizarre, and that’s an understatement.
This game feels like it will decide the Premier League title race between City and Spurs’ bitter rivals Arsenal.
However, Tottenham fans couldn’t think of anything worse than seeing the Gunners lift the trophy on Sunday, but if they beat the Citizens tonight it becomes more than a distinct possibility.
I imagine it will be one of the strangest atmospheres we’ve ever seen, and the match could be the same. Stay with us to see how it will unfold.
I’m curious what will happen.
