Tottenham are preparing a late transfer for Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher.

The 23-year-old, who captained Chelsea against AFC Wimbledon on Wednesday night, is aware of Tottenham’s interest, but they have yet to take a formal approach.

The deal is likely to hinge on Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg’s imminent departure with the Denmark international, where he discusses a possible move to Atletico Madrid.

Gallagher was previously the subject of a £38 million offer from West Ham, but preferred to stay at Chelsea.

He played regularly under Mauricio Pochettino but is aware that starting places could be limited with the arrival of Cole Palmer from Manchester City and the prospect of Chelsea adding another signing before the period closes.

Gallagher has always preferred to stay at Stamford Bridge but is realistic about his prospects.

Brighton have also expressed an interest in the young England international. They are bringing Ansu Fati from Barcelona on loan today, but Gallagher remains interested if they can come up with a financial package.

Tottenham also intend to make a bid today for Brennan Johnson from Nottingham Forest, after Brentford turned down a £43 million bid earlier this week.

Gallagher has started every Premier League match under Mauricio Pochettino so far, along with Enzo Fernandez and new £115million Moises Caicedo in the engine room.
