Tottenham ‘missed a move at the deadline to bring Udinese winger Gerard Deulofeu back to the Premier League’ as the former Everton and Watford star suffered a knee injury
- Tottenham missed a move on transfer deadline day for Gerard Deulofeu
- The Udinese winger was drawing interest from both Spurs and Aston Villa.
- A deal was close for the 28-year-old, but he suffered a knee injury last month.
Tottenham reportedly missed a move on transfer deadline day for former Everton and Watford winger Gerard Deulofeu.
The 28-year-old was heavily linked with Aston Villa during the January transfer window before Spurs considered a move as they were keen to bring in reinforcements.
Spurs managed to sign Pedro Porro from Sporting Lisbon for £42 million and also mutually terminated Matt Doherty’s contract to allow the right-back to join Atlético Madrid on a free transfer.
Boss Antonio Conte, however, was keen to add Spanish star Deulofeu to bolster his attacking options before the window slammed shut.
A deal was said to be very close to completion before Deulofeu suffered a knee injury last month, according to transfer guru Fabrizio Romano.

Spurs boss Antonio Conte (pictured) was keen to add Deulofeu to bolster his attacking options.
Romano said on his YouTube channel: “We know Tottenham were looking for an attacking player.
‘Nicolo Zaniolo then decided to go on loan to Danjuma as a great opportunity. But I can reveal to you, and this is an exclusive name, that Tottenham were considering signing Gerard Deulofeu.
‘Udinese player, he is doing amazing in Serie A and had a fantastic first part of the season. He is already proven in the Premier League.
He played for Everton, for Watford. He also for Barcelona and AC Milan in the past. So a major player with good experience ready to make an impact. Much appreciated also by the directive, but what happened?
Deulofeu was very close to Tottenham. From what I heard, the deal was almost done for Deulofeu to join Tottenham.
“But what happened is Gerard Deulofeu has an injury, a serious injury, so he was no longer available on the market just before he joined Tottenham.”
The injury ruined any chance of Deulofeu leaving Udinese, at least until the summer, when he hoped to spark more interest.
The former Watford winger remains under contract at Udinese until the summer of 2024
The winger’s contract expires in the summer of 2024, so Tottenham and even Aston Villa could pique his interest again.
The 28-year-old has registered seven assists and three goals so far this season, with Udinese pushing for European places in Serie A.
Deulofeu, previously of Everton and Watford, scored 13 goals last season and was said to be open to a move away.
Udinese had valued Deulofeu at around £17m when AC Milan and Napoli registered interest late last season.
