Tottenham ‘make decision over Son Heung-min’s future’ – with the club captain’s deal set to expire at the end of the season
Tottenham will activate Son Heung-min’s one-year contract extension with the club that will keep him in place until the end of the season, according to reports.
Son’s existing contract expires in May, with Spurs keen to prevent one of their star players from leaving on a free transfer while rival European clubs can talk to him in January.
Extending the South Korean’s contract puts an end to such a situation created by Tottenham not needing Son’s consent to add another 12 months to his existing contract, as reported by The Telegraph.
The extension means Son will remain part of Ange Postecoglou’s squad until the end of the 2025/26 season, which will mark 11 years since he first joined from Bayer Leverkusen.
Spurs boss Postecoglou was keen to keep hold of the 32-year-old forward, who was named captain by the head coach at the start of his first season in charge of the club.

Son has achieved legendary status at Tottenham, scoring 165 goals and playing a crucial role in the club qualifying for the Champions League on several occasions.
He has scored three times in the Premier League so far this season and registered his third assist of the season in Tottenham’s shock 4-1 weekend win over Aston Villa.
However, despite Son’s stunning rise from a relatively unknown figure to a household name among England’s top fans, he has been unable to help the club end its trophy drought.
Son is determined to bring silverware to Tottenham as he prepares for his 11th year at the club
Son previously said of his ambitions to bring silverware to the club: “I’m completely focused on this year and just want to win something that everyone at the club – the players all around – deserves,” he said. ‘That’s what I work for.
‘You never know what will happen in the future, but I will give everything for this club because it has been around for almost ten years and I give everything.
‘I still have a contract with the club, that’s the most important thing and I just want to give everything until my contract [expires].’
Son hopes this can be the year Spurs finally bring a trophy to London, with an upcoming Carabao Cup tie against Man United meaning a great chance to reach the last four at Wembley.
