Tottenham lead Premier League tributes for Terry Venables after their former manager, who won the FA Cup with Spurs in 1991 and led England at Euro ’96, dies after a ‘long illness’

Premier League clubs paid tribute to Terry Venables after the late England manager died on Sunday aged 80 following a long illness.
Venables was a midfielder for Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur and Queens Park Rangers during a 15-year top-level career and won two caps for England.
He then moved into management and led Crystal Palace from the Third Division to the First in the late 1970s, before taking QPR as a second-tier team to the 1982 FA Cup Final.
‘El Tel’ attracted the attention of leading European clubs and took charge of Barcelona in 1984, winning the LaLiga title in 1985 and reaching the 1986 European Cup final.
Venables won the FA Cup with Tottenham in 1991 but is best remembered as the England manager during their participation in the Euro ’96 semi-finals on home turf.

Spurs, one of Venables’ former clubs, and Aston Villa led the tributes ahead of their match later this afternoon.
“The club is extremely saddened by the passing of former player and manager Terry Venables,” the club said in a statement on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter.
“Our deepest condolences go out to Terry’s friends and family at this incredibly difficult time.
‘As a tribute, we will applaud for a minute before kick-off and our players will wear black armbands during this afternoon’s match against Aston Villa. Rest in peace, Terry.”
In a statement, Villa added: ‘Everyone at Aston Villa is deeply saddened by the passing of former England manager Terry Venables. Before kick-off against Terry’s former club Tottenham Hotspur this afternoon, there will be a minute’s applause in his memory. The thoughts and condolences of everyone at the club go out to his family and friends at this time.”
Chelsea, with whom Venables won the League in 1965, and Arsenal also remembered the late England manager with posts on social media.

Arsenal shared a short statement to commemorate Venables on social media
“Everyone at Chelsea Football Club is deeply saddened to learn of the death of former Blue, Terry Venables, at the age of 80,” the Blues statement said.
‘The thoughts and condolences of everyone at the Club go out to his family and friends at this difficult time. Rest in peace, Terry.”
Arsenal added: ‘Everyone at Arsenal sends their sincere condolences to the family of Terry Venables following the sad news of his passing. May he rest in peace.’
Venables is survived by his wife of 32 years, Yvette. A statement from the Venables family said: ‘We are totally devastated by the loss of a wonderful husband and father who passed away peacefully yesterday [Saturday] after a long illness.
‘We would ask that privacy be provided at this incredibly sad time so that we can mourn the loss of this dear man who was so fortunate to be in our lives.’
