Tottenham defender Djed Spence has been loaned to Leeds United for a season.

Spence could make his Leeds debut at home against Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday.

The 23-year-old has struggled to get playing time at Tottenham after his exceptional 2021-22 season on loan to Nottingham Forest from Middlesbrough prompted Spurs and then-manager Antonio Conte to spend £20 million to secure his services.

In his debut season at Tottenham, Spence made just six appearances and spent the second half of the season on loan in Ligue 1 at Rennes, where he endured an equally disappointing spell.

A return to the second tier with Daniel Farke’s side could see the attacking full-back return to form.

Leeds were keen to bolster their full-back options following their relegation from the Premier League, despite retaining Junior Firpo and Luke Ayling and signing former Norwich star Sam Byram on a free transfer this summer.

The Spurs will receive a loan fee of £1 million and have resisted including any form of purchase option in the deal.

Leeds are hoping Spence will help improve a leaky defense that has broken through seven times in just four games.

Farke’s side won a thrilling 4-3 draw at Ipswich last weekend.

The team is 13th after a mixed start to the championship season, winning and losing once and drawing twice so far.
