Tottenham Hotspur have confirmed the signing of defender Micky van de Ven from Wolfsburg on a six-year deal after agreeing a £43 million move.

The centre-back was in the stands at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium this weekend to watch his new side beat Shakhtar Donetsk and has now been revealed.

Van de Ven, who will wear the number 37 shirt, underwent his medical yesterday after the Spurs signed an agreement to strengthen Ange Postecoglou’s side.

Spurs were in the market for a new central defender this summer and Van de Ven, an Under-21 international for the Netherlands, became a priority target.

The 22-year-old follows Ashley Phillips, Guglielmo Vicario, Manor Solomon, Dejan Kulusevski and James Maddison through the door ahead of the new season.

Spurs began talks about Van de Ven last month and a breakthrough came last week, with the talented center half quickly agreeing on his long-term contract.

He made 36 appearances for Wolfsburg last season, leading them to an eighth-place finish in the Bundesliga, and joined the club from Volendam in 2021.

Van de Ven will provide stiff competition for the likes of Cristian Romero, Davinson Sanchez, Phillips, Joe Rodon and Eric Dier at the heart of Spurs’ backline.

Postecoglou, however, is keen on further reinforcements in the defense.

“There’s no question that we need some reinforcements in that area,” he told reporters.

“We are looking for players who can play the kind of football we want. Hopefully we’ll get one or two done in the next few days to strengthen us in that area.”
