Tottenham Hotspur have confirmed the appointment of Ange Postecoglou, with the Celtic boss becoming the first Australian to lead a Premier League club.

Spurs confirmed the news Tuesday morning by tweeting, “We are delighted to announce the appointment of Ange Postecoglou as our new head coach on a four-year contract.”

Spurs have been looking for a new manager since Antonio Conte’s sacking in March, while Cristian Stellini and Ryan Mason have taken on interim coaching roles.

A move for Feyenoord boss Arne Slot fell through at the last hour, as the Dutchman joined the Eredivisie side, and attention soon turned to Postecoglou, who has enjoyed a hugely successful two-year spell in Glasgow .

The 57-year-old’s move to the Scottish giants has been widely derided given his lack of experience in European football after spending much of his career coaching in Japan and Australia.

Who is Ange Postecoglou?

Ange Postecoglou becomes the new boss of Tottenham Hotspur and the first Australian manager in the Premier League. Here’s a look at his career so far…

  • Born in Athens, he moved to Australia aged five, where he won two titles as a defender with South Melbourne Hellas – a club formed by fellow Greek migrants. There he worked under the legendary Ferenc Puskas, who was the head coach.
  • He won four Australian caps from 1985-88 before injury forced him to take up coaching.
  • Postecoglou led South Melbourne to two titles as a manager in his early thirties and then spent seven years coaching Australia’s youth teams before leading Brisbane Roar from bottom of the A-League to consecutive Grand Final victories in 2011 and 2012, with a record of 36 games. unbeaten run.
  • He took charge of Australia at the 2014 World Cup, won the Asian Cup in 2015 and qualified for the 2018 World Cup with his country. But two weeks later, he resigned and took charge of Yokohama F. Marinos in Japan, leading he led them to their first J-League title in 15 years in 2019.
  • After joining Celtic in 2021, he won five of six domestic trophies during his two years in charge, including a treble in his last campaign.

Can he end the drought?

Tottenham last won a trophy in 2008, but Postecoglou are a proven winner.

5 – Postecoglou is one of only five Celtic managers, along with Jock Stein, Martin O’Neill, Brendan Rodgers and Neil Lennon, to have won a domestic Treble.

77 – He won 83 of his 113 games with Celtic, finishing with a winning percentage of 77 per cent and 2.42 points per game.

But Postecoglou silenced those doubters by winning five of the six domestic trophies on offer, while implementing an appealing style of football and flaunting a savvy knowledge of the transfer market with inspired signings.

The former Socceroos boss is now tasked with turning the fate of the north London club, which this year fell to a humble eighth place despite ambitions for regular Champions League football.

Spurs chairman Daniel Levy said: ‘Ange brings a positive mentality and a fast, attacking style of play.

“He has a strong track record of developing players and understands the importance of the link from the academy – everything that is important to our club. We are delighted to have Ange with us as we prepare for the season ahead.”

Celtic wished the Australian well in a statement on Tuesday morning.

Michael Nicholson, Chief Executive of Celtic, said: ‘It has been a pleasure to work with Ange, a great football manager and a good man. He has served the club with such energy and determination and achieved a phenomenal level of success.

“I want to thank him for everything he has given us and I wish Ange and his family the very best for the future in everything they do.”

The Scottish club confirmed their search for the 57-year-old’s replacement is ongoing, with former Leeds boss Jesse Marsch linked to the post.
