Tottenham are closing on a deal for Blackburn Rovers’ highly promising centre back Ashley Phillips.

The 17-year old has already broken into Rovers’ first team and has been followed by Spurs since last season.

Director of football Fabio Paratici is expected to be at Rovers game at Reading tonight ahead of giving a move the green light.

Phillips has been watched by Chelsea and Manchester United too and is out of contract next year.

The 6ft 4ins defender was on the bench last season and impressed scouts starring for Rovers’ development side.

Tottenham are looking to strike a deal ahead of their rivals once Paratici gives his approval.

Phillips is an England under-17 international, winning five caps, and has made two appearances for Rovers so far this season – once each in the Championship and the Carabao Cup.

Spurs have been busily adding to their defence this summer, and a move for Phillips would bring their total to four defensive recruits.

The north London side have already completed moves for Djed Spence from Championship side Middlesbrough and a loan move for Barcelona’s out of favour centre-back Clement Lenglet.

And earlier this week they finalised a deal for Udinese’s Destiny Udogie for a £15million fee, although the 19-year-old has immediately returned to the Serie A side until the end of the season, having signed a five-year deal.

Udogie’s arrival takes Spurs’ total transfer spend this summer to more than £107m as Antonio Conte continues to rebuild his squad with seven new signings.
