Tottenham intend to have Harry Kane up front this season, boss Ange Postecoglou says, as he expects the star to stay despite interest from Bayern Munich

  • The new Tottenham boss said routine contingency plans are in place in all positions
  • But Ange insists he won’t waste time worrying amid Bayern Munich’s interest

Ange Postecoglou confirmed he is making plans for the season with Harry Kane at the front of his Tottenham squad.

The new Spurs boss said contingency plans were in place for all positions as a matter of routine as he could lose one of his players to a serious injury at any time but would not waste time and energy on matters beyond his control.

Postecoglou spoke to business executives from Western Australia during a Q&A, where his team is on tour ahead of the season and where he is a homecoming hero following his move to the Premier League from Celtic.

“I certainly hope so,” he replied, when asked if star striker Kane would take charge of his team next season. “It’s one of those things that when you’re in this role, I’ve learned that you have to deal with the certainties in front of you.

“If you start thinking about what happens when that happens and that happens, there are too many things that can be floating in the air at any given moment, and you lose focus on what’s most important.

“The most important thing for me right now is to build a team that will be successful in the Premier League. If I wait to see what an outcome is before starting that process, I’m wasting precious time.”

Kane is in the final year of his contract with Tottenham Hotspur, with a lucrative new offer on the table but a desire to move on to challenge for the trophies, with interest from Bayern Munich.

Many more clubs would be interested in a transfer for the England captain next year when his contract expires.

“He is at the club at the moment,” Postecoglou said. “He is already a legend of the football club. If he retired today, they would probably still build a statue to him.

“He’s a fantastic guy, a fantastic professional, but with anything in life there are always uncertainties.

‘I’m not trying to predict. You always have contingencies on your mind, not just about Harry but every player because, knock on wood, someone could get injured on the eve of the season and as a manager you have to be ready for all the possibilities.

“It’s one of the attractions of the role, I think, to be able to work with people like Harry and Sonny and the guys who are top footballers in their own right, but also for the club.

“Hopefully I get to work with Harry for much longer.”
