Perisic, 34, was a key member of Antonio Conte’s side last season, playing regularly as a winger in a Spurs side that finished eighth in the Premier League.

He has been more of a team player since Ange Postegoclou, but has been used as a winger in a 4-3-3 formation under the Australian.

He came off the bench in the 80th minute at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday, taking the corner to help compatriot Richarlison score the equalizer before Dejan Kulusevski’s winner.

He has made six appearances for Tottenham this season, including one in the Carabao Cup in the club’s penalty shootout defeat to Fulham, but his season is likely over.

At 34 years old and out of contract this summer, it is possible that Perisic has played his last match for the club he joined from Inter Milan last season.

During his career with Spurs, he has made 50 appearances to date, scoring one goal after arriving on a free transfer to join Conte’s men.

Before his arrival, he had spent seven years in Italy with Inter Milan, making just under 250 appearances with a loan spell at Bayern Munich sandwiched in the middle.

He also played for Wolfsburg, Borussia Dortmund and Club Brugge during his career.

The veteran also has 129 appearances for the Croatia national team and was a key member of the team that finished runners-up at the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

He is third on the all-time appearances list for his country behind Luka Modric (168) and Darijo Srna (134), and looks to be a lock for the team at this summer’s European Championships.

However, he now faces a race against time to be fit for the tournament, which begins on June 14 in Germany and continues until July 14.

With nine months to go before the competition, it is possible that Perisic will be recovered in time, but he will have to spend months in rehabilitation to recover from his injury once the operation is complete.
