Tosin Adarabioyo is undergoing medical examinations today ahead of his move to Chelsea.

The Fulham defender will become the first signing of the Enzo Maresca era once he completes the formalities of his deal after agreeing to join Chelsea this weekend.

Newcastle United led the way for the 26-year-old and were close to an agreement, but Chelsea made an improved offer late last week and talks progressed quickly.

Adarabioyo knows Chelsea’s new boss Maresca from their time together at Manchester City, while Chelsea’s qualification for Europe was an added incentive for the move.

Adarabioyo will be a free agent at the end of the month when his contract with Fulham expires.

The fact that he is a player with extensive Premier League experience who is available on a free transfer is also an obvious appeal.

The departure of Thiago Silva this summer has created space for a centre-back ahead of next season, and Adarabioyo is seen as excellent value for money as the club look to fill the void left by the Brazilian.

And while it is recognized that Adarabioyo is not necessarily some kind of replacement for Silva, Chelsea’s technical team views the centre-back as a player with significant potential who can develop.
