One man stabbed and two others assaulted by knife-wielding man in seaside town

A man was reportedly stabbed and two other people – including a man carrying a young child in his arms – were reportedly attacked in the latest wave of knife attacks to shock Australia.

Harrowing CCTV footage showed a man with a knife in a pharmacy in the seaside town of Torquay, 105km south-west of Melbourne, around 10.45am on Saturday.

The man, in his 50s, walked into the Torquay Pharmacy on Gilbert St and threatened customers with a knife before allegedly kicking and punching a man at the counter. He then held his fists up in a boxing stance.

The man then walked outside when another man tried to stop him and allegedly attacked another person as terrified customers ran to the back of the store.

Police said a man armed with a knife entered a number of businesses on Zeally Bay Rd and Fischer St, the Herald Sun reported.

“It is believed he then approached a man and (allegedly) stabbed him on Zeally Bay Road,” Victoria Police spokeswoman Caitlin Knight said.

The man suffered minor injuries and was treated at the scene by ambulance personnel.

The man then went back to the pharmacy and allegedly assaulted two people, neither of whom he knew, police said.

The alleged perpetrator ran from the store but was arrested a short time later at a house in Torquay.

He was taken to hospital for assessment, with mental health reportedly playing a role in the alleged incidents.

The man was known to the staff, said assistant pharmacist Sally Irwin.

“There were a lot of people in the store trying to get their hands on some medicine but he just lost it,” she told the Herald Sun.

‘On the way out he pushed someone against the front door and threatenedly said he would come back and pick us all up.’

There were about fifteen people, including children, in the store at the time.

The alleged attack comes just weeks after a series of stabbings in Australia, including the Bondi Junction massacre.

“Given what has happened recently it has affected us all, it’s frightening,” Ms Irwin said.
