Tornado barrels toward the U.S. Capitol as D.C. is put on mandatory shelter-in-place alert

A rare tornado warning is in effect for the US Capitol as storms move across Washington DC.

The U.S. Capitol Police said that following the warning, personnel in the Capitol complex should immediately go to office shelters located in case of inclement weather. No one is allowed to leave the building until instructed to do so.

They were told to bring emergency equipment and visitors. If people were not near their office, they were told to go to the nearest office and take shelter there.

Police said to close doors and windows from outside and stay away from it

People in Washington, including residents of the Capitol complex, have been issued a tornado warning as storms move through the Washington area

Police advised people to lock doors and windows and stay away.
