The first day of the third Ashes Test entertained spectators at Headingley with a record-breaking spell of English fast bowling, a five wicket haul, a challenging Australian century and over a dozen wickets.

England bowled the Aussies for 263, despite Mitchell Marsh’s impressive knock of 118, before falling to 68-3 on stumps with Yorkshire pair Jonny Bairstow and Joe Root in the crease.

LAWRENCE COOTH from Mail Sport takes a look at the big stats of the day from Headingley.

  • Mark Wood took five wickets in a home Test for the first time, on the 14th attempt. His previous five-wicket hauls have been at St Lucia (five for 41 v West Indies in 2018-19), Johannesburg (five for 46 v South Africa in 2019-20) and Hobart (six for 37 v Australia in 2021-22 ).
  • Wood’s figures of five for 34 meant he finished an innings with a Test bowling average of less than 30 for the first time in his career.
