Top Republicans hammer DOJ for refusing to prosecute Michael Cohen after admitting to perjury…while he ‘cashes in’ on TikTok during blockbuster Trump hush money trial

Some leading Republicans in the House of Representatives are demanding to know why the Justice Department has not yet investigated Michael Cohen, despite the former Trump fixer admitting he lied to Congress.

Intelligence Chairman Mike Turner and GOP Conference Chair Elise Stefanik wrote the Justice Department six months ago with a criminal referral for Cohen. The DOJ acknowledged receipt of the letter, but never followed up.

Cohen admitted in October that he lied to Congress in 2019 when he falsely told the House Intelligence Committee behind closed doors that Trump had not been ordered to inflate his net worth.

“So you lied under oath in February 2019? Is that your testimony?’ he was asked at the end of October by Trump lawyer Alina Habba in the ongoing $250 million civil fraud trial in New York about Trump’s finances.

“Yes,” Cohen replied.

“The Biden administration’s attempts to block this investigation are yet another example of Biden’s pursuit of justice against President Trump,” Stefanik, N.Y., the House’s third-ranking Republican, said in a statement to DailyMail.com.

“Michael Cohen has no credibility. He is an admitted liar,” said Turner, R-Ohio.

Cohen, meanwhile, could undermine his own credibility as a witness, as he has done go to TikTok to talk about the cause and ask for donations. ‘Trump 2024?’ Cohen said on the video sharing platform. “More like Trump 20-24 years.”

Cohen served a stint in federal prison for violating campaign finance laws by facilitating the payment of $130,000 to Stormy Daniels to keep her quiet about the alleged affair.

Trump is currently in court in New York on hush money charges related to the payment. He has pleaded not guilty to 34 charges of falsifying company records in connection with the hush money payment Cohen made to Daniels just before the 2016 election.

The pair noted that Michael Colangelo — a Manhattan prosecutor and former top Justice Department attorney — led the prosecution for the case in which Trump was accused of illegally concealing hush money payments to cover allegations of an affair with Stormy Daniels, with Cohen as their ‘star witness’, to silence them. ‘

Trump’s lawyers have insisted the payment was not intended to influence an election, while Cohen said that is exactly what it was intended for.

Cohen turned on Trump as the walls closed in and he realized he was going to jail because of his legal troubles.

Cohen was previously convicted of lying to Congress in 2018 about his work on a business deal with Trump Tower in Russia.

In 2018, Cohen pleaded guilty to eight criminal charges, including five counts of tax evasion and bank fraud. He was sentenced to three years in prison and a $50,000 fine.

He was also barred from practicing law in New York State.

At the time, he said the lie to the House Intelligence Committee was an attempt to align with Trump’s “political message.”

Stefanik and Turner also noted that the DOJ has brought “the first contempt of Congress charges in nearly four decades” against two other Trump aides, Peter Navarro and Steve Bannon, for ignoring a congressional subpoena.

“Perjury and false statements before Congress are crimes that undermine the integrity of the constitutional duty to conduct oversight and investigations – far more than challenging the legality of a subpoena,” they wrote. “Yet Biden’s Justice Department has done nothing, despite an admission by Mr. Cohen that he lied to Congress under oath.”

Cohen was the first to be charged by former special counsel Robert Mueller with lying to Congress during his investigation into the Trump campaign’s connections to Russia.

Mueller concluded after 22 months that there wasn’t enough evidence to prove there was collusion, and while he didn’t rule on obstruction, he said he couldn’t “acquit” the president.

Trump’s lawyers last month questioned Cohen about his past convictions during an intense cross-examination at the civil fraud trial.

Habba attacked Cohen’s credibility by citing comments made by prosecutors during his 2018 sentencing.

The then-judge also noted that Cohen’s crimes showed a “pattern of deception that permeated his professional life” and stated that he had “abused his relationship with a powerful individual,” referring to Trump.

Habba cited statements saying Cohen was “motivated by personal greed” and had “repeatedly used his power and influence for deceptive purposes.”

Cohen reported to prison in May 2019 but was released to home confinement following a COVID-19 outbreak in federal prisons.
