Top Democrat Hakeem Jeffries calls Republican James Comer ‘totally out of control and unhinged’
Top Democrat Hakeem Jeffries calls Republican James Comer “totally out of control and unhinged” for Biden’s family investigation — and says he has faith in the justice system as Hunter will avoid jail for lying on a gun form
- “This was an investigation initiated by Trump’s Justice Department,” Jeffries said
- The minority leader said he would leave it to the public to determine whether the deal with Hunter Biden is fair
Top House Democrat and staunch gun reform advocate Hakeem Jeffries said his caucus would respect the rule of law when it came to Hunter Biden’s plea deal — even if it meant the president’s son wouldn’t face jail time for lying about a gun application.
The New York Democrat turned the script to Republicans, who claim the Biden Department of Justice (DOJ) is going after the president’s main political opponent – Donald Trump – for his handling of classified documents.
“This was an investigation initiated by the Trump Justice Department, which made the decision that they would investigate the son of Donald Trump’s most prominent political life,” Jeffries said of Hunter Biden’s plea deal with the U.S. law firm in Delaware.
The minority leader said he would leave it to the public to determine whether the sentence is fair.
“Even so, the Democrats still believe that we are letting the justice system take its course and express optimism that all individuals involved, including the judge, will ultimately pass judgment on the following facts, by allowing the law to be guided by the Constitution. And then the American people can make up their own mind about the fairness of it all.”

But House Republicans have insisted that the president’s son has made a love deal — in one in which he will plead guilty to two tax felonies and evade jail on felony charges involving a weapon.
The deal includes a so-called diversion program that will result in prosecutors dropping the gun charges if he complies with the terms of the program.
Republicans have used the deal to advance their narrative of a “two-tier system” within the DOJ targeting conservatives.
Speaker Kevin McCarthy dismissed the fact that the US attorney handling the case was a Trump holdover.
“You think it’s right and fair for a political opponent to get jail time, but a presidential son — and when you compare this to other individuals in America who have the same charges against them, the same crimes they’ve been guilty of, that they were proposed to have 10 years and other time periods — I think that’s a disparity of justice,” McCarthy told reporters this week.

Jeffries also on Thursday called Oversight Chair James Comer “totally out of control and unhinged” for his crusade against the Biden family and its alleged corruption.
“They have not discovered anything that in any way proves wrongdoing. They just peddle conspiracy theory after conspiracy theory,” he told reporters.
Comer called Hunter Biden’s plea deal a “blow on the wrist” and said he would ask U.S. attorney David Weiss, who oversaw the deal, to testify before the oversight or judicial committees and provide a “transparent” explanation of to give his research.
Comer’s committee is investigating alleged payouts to the Biden family by foreigners in exchange for policy outcomes. They honed an FBI form detailing a conversation between the FBI and a confidential source.
In it, the informant describes claims of a $5 million “arrangement” for an exchange of money for policy decisions between then-Vice President Joe Biden and a foreigner. Hunter Biden was part of the scheme and reportedly collected $5 million as well.
