Two top candidates have emerged in Alabama’s search for Nick Saban’s successor, according to a new report.

The 72-year-old Saban announced his retirement Wednesday after a storied career that saw him win seven national championships at the college level.

Now, according to the Tuscaloosa NewsWashington’s Kalen DeBoer or Florida State’s Mike Norvell could take over the Crimson Tide job.

Alabama offensive coordinator Tommy Rees is also reportedly being considered.

The Tuscaloosa News said the school’s search for a new coach likely won’t continue. But earlier Thursday, Oregon’s Dan Lanning appeared to leave his name out of consideration to take the now-vacant position.

Lanning was rumored to be one of the favorites for the job. However, in a video posted to social media, the coach put together a montage of clips of his Oregon team from meetings and games, all with captions expressing his desire to remain in Eugene.

All in all, the captions read: “If you’re worried about your coach leaving, come play for us. The Ducks aren’t going anywhere and I’m not leaving.”

Ryan Williams, the No. 9 overall recruit in the class of 2024, was released from Alabama after Saban’s retirement.

The long-serving coach, meanwhile, said in a statement: “We have loved every minute of our 17 years as head coach at Alabama and becoming part of the Tuscaloosa community.

“It’s not just about how many games we’ve won and lost, but it’s also about the legacy and how we’ve gone about it.

‘We’ve always tried to do it the right way. The goal was always to help players create more value for their future, be the best player they could be and be more successful in life because they were part of the program. Hopefully we did that and we will always consider Alabama our home.”
