A boy has been taken to hospital with serious injuries after the balcony he was standing on collapsed at his prestigious secondary school.
The student was standing on the Year 7 and 8 deck at St Kevin’s College in Toorak, Melbourne, when it collapsed about 11.20am on Friday.
A A school spokesperson said the boy was ‘responsive’ and in a stable condition, reportedly suffering fractures to his wrist, collarbone and leg.
‘An ambulance was immediately called and his parents contacted him. Please know that while we do not have the full details of his condition, he is responding,” they said.
‘We are aware that some staff and students witnessed the event and we will continue to support them. We are aware that incidents like these can have different consequences for people.
‘With this in mind, EAP advisors will be on site this afternoon from 1.30pm to 3.30pm to support all staff wishing to access this service in the Chapel. As always, EAP support is available after hours and on weekends.
‘I would like to express my appreciation for the quick and professional actions of all employees involved in a challenging situation.’
The boy was treated by paramedics before being taken to hospital the Royal Children’s Hospital with upper and lower body injuries.

WorkSafe inspectors inspected debris under the meter-high balcony that had collapsed
Photos from the scene show the balcony several feet high above the concrete ground below.
WorkSafe officers were seen at the college under the balcony inspecting the rubble.
“WorkSafe has been notified and inspectors and detectives are responding,” a spokesperson confirmed.
