Tony Armstrong reveals he finds his status as a sex symbol ‘kind of weird’

Tony Armstrong says he finds his sex symbol status ‘a bit weird’ and insists it leaves him ‘sweating’ – after announcing acting ambitions

Tony Armstrong doesn’t like being called a “heartthrob.”

The former AFL star turned TV presenter tells this week’s issue of Stellar magazine that his status as a sex symbol makes him uncomfortable.

‘I have to be honest. I always find it a bit weird, that kind of thing. I shut up,” said the 33-year-old.

“My hands are sweating now because I don’t even think about it. It’s not something I think about at all.’

He added, “It’s so left of center for me. I mean, people need to see what I look like when I wake up.

“Then let’s see if they still think I’m heartbreaking, because, Jesus Christ, it’s a sight to behold.”

Tony recently announced that he is fronting a new ABC television show, Great Australian Stuff.

“I had fun making this – I hope you enjoy watching. Tonight at 8pm on @abctv or catch up anytime on ABC iView,” he wrote on Instagram.

According to the ABC website, the four-part series “reveals the surprising stories behind some of our most loved – and hated – iconic Australian ‘things'”.

It comes after Tony revealed his new career ambition of becoming an actor.

Tony said winning the 2022 Graham Kennedy Award for Most Popular New Talent at the Logies has inspired him to pursue his acting dreams.

Tony, 33, is currently a sports presenter on ABC News Breakfast, as well as his role as host of the new four-part series, Great Australian Stuff.

‘[A Logie] definitely reminds you of people who put together shows,” said Tony The Sydney Morning Herald.

“I still can’t believe I have one. It wasn’t on the bingo card.’

He added: “It’s still weird for me, but I’m very humble, and that was very much a vote for [ABC] News Breakfast, so my success is only due to the people I’m lucky enough to work with.’

Speaking of his new show, he said the program takes a deeper look at “the weird and crazy, wonderful things that make us, us, warts and stuff.”

Last October, Tony revealed that his request for a raise was approved by ABC management just hours after winning a Logie Award.

Tony rose to fame on the football field playing for the Adelaide Crows, Sydney Swans and Collingwood Magpies between 2010 and 2015.

He changed careers in 2020 when he joined the ABC as a sports presenter and commentator for Grandstand AFL and the host of Offsider’s summer series.
