Amazon Studios has built a reputation for creating and/or adapting inventive superhero projects – and The power could be another similar hit for its streaming platform.

With Toni Collette (Knives out, Heir apparent), Auli’i Cravalho (Vaiana), and Toheeb Jimoh (Ted Lasso season 3), the upcoming Prime Video thriller series will shock audiences with a global story based on gender imbalance and a single superpower.

Based on Naomi Alderman’s bestseller of the same name, The power takes place in a world not much different from ours. But one fateful day, teenage girls around the world suddenly develop the ability to electrocute people at will. This nature-based power is hereditary, there is no ‘cure’ for it and, most important of all, carriers can generate the same power in their older mothers, sisters, cousins and grandmothers.

Unsurprisingly, the emergence of this superpower is leading to a complete reversal of the world’s gender-based balance of power. Soon the sparks of revolution are ignited and men are soon seen as the lesser of the sexes of mankind. The fallout that follows will then be as dramatic, thrilling and thrilling as you can imagine.

Considering the emergence of this superpower all over the world, The power will have a global feel. Thus, viewers should expect the series’ events to take place in multiple countries, including the US, UK, Nigeria, Eastern Europe and beyond.

The power was developed for Amazon’s streamer by Alderman himself, with a 10-episode first season greenlighting one of the world’s top streaming services in February 2019. Raelle Tucker (Real blood, Jessica Jones) serves as showrunner and joins Councilor, Jane Featherstone (Chernobyl) and Reed Morano (Billions) on the series’ executive producing team.

Originally, Leslie Mann (This is 40, Croods: a new era) was slated to star in the series. However, due to scheduling conflicts, Mann quit in April 2021, and Collette replaced her in August of that year.

Collette, Cravalho and Jimoh are joined by notable actors, including John Leguizamo (violent night, Ice age), Eddie Marsan (Ray Donovan), Ria Zmitrowicz (Mr Selfridge), Rob Delaney (The school of good and evil) and Alice Eva (Star Trek Into darkness).

The project, which could become one of the best Prime Video shows if it catches on with critics and general TV fans, comes from production company SISTER, who played a major role in the development of Chernobylone of the best HBO Max shows ever made.

The power doesn’t have an official release date yet, but will be on Prime Video in March. Stay with TechRadar for more information on the launch when we have it.
