Tom Ince’s 20-yard strike sealed Reading’s 2-1 win over Cardiff: a round-up of Championship games

Tom Ince’s ‘wonder goal’ was the decider for Reading in their 2-1 home win over Cardiff.

Callum O’Dowda’s early header from a free kick put the visitors in front after just four minutes.

But it was another set piece which drew Reading level, Shane Long’s penalty coming just before the half-hour mark. It was the 35-year-old’s first goal for the club in 11 years after re-signing for the Berkshire side in the summer.

Ince’s 63rd-minute winner was a 20-yard drive, and drew plaudits from his manager – and dad – Paul.

‘It really was a wonder goal from Tom,’ Ince senior said. ‘He’s just got that bit of quality and it was fully deserved.’

Paul Ince added his son, with his Premier League experience, was ‘an example to everyone’, regardless of the family ties.

After winning their opening game against Norwich, Cardiff manager Steve Morison was less than impressed with the Reading performance.

‘I’m disappointed, we didn’t really show up,’ Morison whined. ‘You drop your level and you lose games of football’.

Norwich themselves relied on a second-half goal from right-back Max Aarons to secure a 1-1 draw home to Wigan Athletic.

James McClean had put the visitors in front just before the 30 minute mark at Carrow Road.

But 22-year-old Aarons secured a point for the Canaries with a low shot which was too powerful for Wigan goalie Ben Amos.

Norwich also felt like they were denied two late penalty shouts, but Wigan held on for a share of the points.

Blackburn Rovers overpowered Swansea City with a three-nil victory at the Liberty Stadium, to make it two wins from two for the Lancashire side.

Rovers took a 1-0 lead into the break with Sammie Szmodics’ goal six minutes before half-time.

The visitors extended their advantage in the second half, first through Chile striker Ben Brereton Diaz, and then Lewis Travis rounded it off in the 84th minute.

The Swans have just one point for their troubles this season, ahead of the visit of Hartlepool in the League Cup on Wednesday.

Stoke City pulled off a 2-0 win at home to Blackpool with goals from Harry Clarke and Jacob Brown.

Clarke’s opener came in the 32nd minute, when the defender – on loan from Arsenal – was able to respond to defender Josh Tymon’s cross.

And quarter of an hour from time, Tymon was on hand for another assist, this time allowing Brown to sweep home and sealing Stoke’s points.

The result left 1,512 travelling Blackpool fans disappointed, although with an opening day win, they still have three points ahead of their league trip to Swansea on Saturday.

Preston North End and Hull played out a 0-0 draw in front of over 15,000 fans at Deepdale.

Preston had the most chances, cataloguing 20 shots, six of which were on target, but they failed to get anything past Hull goalie Matt Ingram.

Meanwhile the Tigers, who only narrowly avoided relegation last season, kept up their unbeaten start to proceedings this time around.

Burnley and Luton played out a 1-1 draw at Turf Moor, with goals early in each half creating an equal balance in the end.

The Hatters started off the game by scoring through defender Sam Potts in the fifth minute.

However, Burnley started the second half brightly, retaliating through midfielder Josh Brownhill.

The result is Luton’s second draw of the season, and maintains the Clarets’ unbeaten start to life in the Championship.

New signing Ellis Simms struck twice as Sunderland came from behind to win at Bristol City

And Sunderland won an exciting tussle at Bristol City 3-2, coming from behind to secure the victory.

The Black Cats found themselves in front after four minutes, through Everton loanee Ellis Simms.

The Robins replied within six minutes through Austrian forward Andreas Weimann.

The hosts found themselves going 2-1 up six minutes into the second half through Chris Martin.

But Sunderland fought their way back to victory, with a second for Simms, and then Scottish striker Ross Stewart’s 72nd minute winner.

The result leaves Bristol City and Huddersfield Town as the only two Championship sides without a point so far in this campaign – although it is still very early days for all concerned.
