“Learning about mental health and its power, and talking to psychiatrists about Danny (his character) and Billy’s struggles, is something that has been so informative for my own life,” Holland told the publication.

Because of the show, he also said he hopes that viewers will have “more respect and more sympathy for people who have mental health problems.”

He then added, “I hope people will feel educated about the powers of mental health, the struggle, [and] our incredible abilities to survive.’

While the show helped his mental health in some ways, he admitted that the emotional nature of the role and heavy subject matter were also very taxing.

“I’m no stranger to the physical aspects of the job doing the whole action movie thing,” he said. “But the mental aspect, it really beat me up, and it took me a long time to recover after that, to sort of get back to reality.”

At one point, he explained that after nine months of filming, he had to break away from his character.

“I saw myself in him, but in my personal life I remember breaking down a little bit at home and thinking, ‘I’m going to shave my head. I have to shave my head because I have to get rid of this character,'” he recalled .

“And of course we were in the middle of shooting so I decided not to do it… It was unlike anything I’ve ever experienced before,” he continued.
