Tom Holland, Michael Douglas and soccer star Neymar headline the A-Listers at Monaco Grand Prix

The rise in Formula 1’s popularity continued to attract the stars for the sport’s most lavish race, the Monaco Grand Prix, on Sunday.

Actors Tom Holland and Michael Douglas headlined the A-Listers on the Circuit de Monaco among the superyachts and flashy sports cars.

The celebs who attended the race saw Red Bull’s defending champion Max Verstappen start from pole position after Saturday’s qualifying.

Holland, donning a deep green shirt and sunglasses, beamed as he chatted with fellow big guns on screen Orlando Bloom, David Harbor and Archie Madekwe.

The Spider-Man actor was pictured talking to Red Bull team principal Christian Horner, whose driver Max Verstappen started from pole position.

American actor Douglas posed with former racing drivers Australian Mark Webber and Briton David Coulthard.

Douglas had had an excellent view of qualifying the day before as he watched from a balcony overlooking the track with his wife Catherine Zeta-Jones.

The power couple had just returned from the launch of the new Aston Martin DB12 at the Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc in Antibes, France.

The pair were in the South of France at the same time as the Cannes Film Festival, which was taking place just a few miles up the coast from Antibes.

Orlando Bloom also took to the paddock and posed with a Red Bull car in the garage ahead of the race, before being photographed soaking up the sun while chatting with other race-goers.

Former Victoria’s Secret model Alessandra Ambrosio wowed the runway as she exuded effortless Monaco chic in a strapless white crop top and baggy navy blue satin pants, showing off her toned, flat stomach.

The Brazilian beauty with her brown locks loose over her shoulders paraded through the meadow and completed the look with sunglasses and a red Chanel shoulder bag.

Music sensation Kylie Minogue was also spotted dazzling on the track in a stylish loose-fitting white jumpsuit and matching strappy heels, adding a splash of color with red-painted nails.

Actor James Marsden, comedian Chris Rock and Dame Shirley Bassey also brought star power to Monaco.

Meanwhile, it was not only the stars of the red carpet who were in force, because the big names from the sports world also took to the track.

Brazilian football star Neymar left the field for the paddock as he cut a fine figure, while his Paris Saint-Germain team-mate Marco Verratti was on hand with girlfriend Jessica Aidi.

The two athletes flew to Monaco after their French side clinched a record-breaking 11th Ligue 1 title on Saturday.

Verstappen called his maiden pole in Monaco ‘very nice’ but there was nothing to cheer for his Red Bull team-mate Sergio Perez as the winner of last year’s race crashed out early in qualifying.

Alpine’s Esteban Ocon surprisingly led towards the end of the session before 41-year-old Fernando Alonso returned to the top as he chased a first pole since the German GP in 2012 when he was with Ferrari.

But Verstappen had other ideas as he raced over the walls of the sinewy street circuit to beat Alonso’s time by just 0.084 seconds to clinch his fourth pole of the season and 23rd of his career.

“I knew this weekend it was going to be tight,” said 25-year-old Verstappen. “I must have pushed a little harder.”

Alonso walked up to Verstappen and shook his hand after a fierce battle between the two-time F1 champions.

“Feels great, I’ve always been confident in what I could do,” said Alonso. “We start on the front row in Monaco, so the job is done.”

Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc chased a third consecutive pole at his home track, but qualified third, 0.106 behind Verstappen.

But Leclerc was subsequently given a three-place grid penalty by race stewards for impeding McLaren’s Lando Norris. Stewards judged Norris to be on a fast lap and overtook Leclerc in the middle of the tunnel, where he was clearly hampered.

Stewards checked the team radio and found that Ferrari had not given Leclerc any warning of Norris’s approach until the other driver was already directly behind him.

Last year Ferrari made a series of blunders with strategic decisions and team orders – including at the Monaco GP, where Leclerc missed out on a potential victory when he was called into the pits at the wrong time and eventually finished fourth.

Saturday’s grid penalty lifted Ocon from fourth to third, while Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz Jr. improved to fourth, ahead of Lewis Hamilton’s Mercedes in fifth.

Pierre Gasly (Alpine), George Russell (Mercedes), Yuki Tsunoda (AlphaTauri) and Norris rounded out the top 10.

Perez starts from the back.
