“I’m a big fan of his, I’ve seen all his movies and box sets, especially during lockdown. I love him to pieces’, he told the BBC.

I haven’t been great in a while, but he put me on a pedestal for a day and that’s all I can ask for.

Ms Shaw, who has cancer, even received a life-size cardboard cutout of the actor instead of flowers from a friend.

Hardy told Ms Shaw that she was “a very popular woman” during the video call.

The hospice shared an update with social media followers who helped ensure their appeal reached Hardy and his team.

A spokesperson said: ‘We have also been impressed by Tom’s kindness and support.

“Jo-Anne and her family can’t thank you enough for making this happen.”
