Tom Hanks issues warning to fans over AI ads using his likeness to promote ‘miracle cures and wonder drugs’

Tom Hanks is once again warning fans that the ads he appears in are not him, but the work of artificial intelligence.

The 68-year-old Oscar winner took his Instagram Thursday night to let his 9 million followers know that viral ads selling “miracle cures and miracle cures” were created using AI technology without his permission.

“There are multiple advertisements on the internet that are falsely using my name, likeness and voice to promote miracle cures and wonder drugs. These advertisements are without my permission, fraudulent and created using AI,” the star’s message read.

“I have nothing to do with these messages, the products, the treatments or the spokespeople who promote these healing methods.”

Tom emphasized that he works exclusively with his “certified physician” for the treatment of his type 2 diabetes.

The 68-year-old Oscar winner took to Instagram on Thursday night to tell his 9 million followers that viral ads selling “miracle cures and miracle cures” were created using AI technology without his permission.

“DON’T GET FOOLED. DON’T GET SCAMMED. DON’T LOSE YOUR HARD-EARNED MONEY,” he concluded.

The post comes nearly a year after Tom sent a similar warning to fans about a fake dentist ad that misused his likeness.

“BEWARE!! There is a video promoting a dental plan with an AI version of me. I have nothing to do with it,” Hanks wrote.

The video above the post features a younger version of the actor wearing a black shirt and blazer.

The Hollywood star previously spoke out about the use of AI in the entertainment industry.

About British comedian Adam Buxton’s Podcast In May 2023, he said, “We saw this coming. We saw that there would be a possibility of taking zeros and ones in a computer and making a face and a character out of them. That’s just gotten a billion times bigger since then, and we’re seeing it everywhere.

I can tell you that there [are] discussions that are going on in all the guilds, all the agencies and all the law firms to find out the legal consequences of the fact that my face and my voice – and everyone else’s – are our intellectual property.

‘If I wanted to, I could get together right now and pitch a series of seven films that would star me and be 32 from now until kingdom come. Anyone can now recreate themselves at any age through AI or deepfake technology.’

He added: ‘I could get hit by a bus tomorrow and that’s it, but performances can go on forever. And other than knowing it’s done with AI or deepfake, there’s nothing to tell you it’s not me and me alone. And it’s going to have a certain level of lifelike quality to it. That’s certainly an artistic challenge, but it’s also a legal one.’

Digitally enhanced versions of the actor can be seen in a number of films he has starred in.

A CGI version of Hanks appears in the 2004 computer-animated Christmas film The Polar Express, and in scenes from 2022’s A Man Called Otto, his appearance is digitally rejuvenated using AI technology.

Meanwhile, the trailer for his latest film Here was released in June, in which the actor and his Forrest Gump colleague Robin Wright (58) can be seen, who have been rejuvenated with the help of digital technology.

Hanks plays Richard, a baby boomer, while Wright plays his teenage girlfriend and eventual wife, Margaret.

Through a combination of traditional makeup effects and digital anti-aging technology, Hanks appears in the film as both a teenager and an 80-year-old.
