Secret Service director shouldn’t resign because putting her in the ‘hot seat’ may be only chance for answers says top Republican

While many Republicans are calling for Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle to be fired, Whip Tom Emmer believes she should stay and be given a role in the “hot seat.”

“Don’t resign,” he told DailyMail.com during the Republican National Convention in remarks directed at Cheatle.

“I think you should be in the hot seat. You should answer all the questions before you get fired. I think that’s where you should be.”

The Republican caucus leader rattled off a list of questions he had for Cheatle, including “the most important of all: How in the world did he kill Cheatle? [the shooter] Did he know that he had to go to that building in the first place? What told him that that building wouldn’t be safe, that he would be able to gain access?’

Cheatle appeared at the RNC and was confronted by Republican senators.

Emmer pointed to the back-and-forth between Trump’s team, which says it requested additional security and was denied, and the Secret Service, which says it did offer the additional security.

“I want to know which of the two is true. If this government has not provided the requested additional resources, that is incredibly burdensome.”

“I know the speaker, some of our members are already calling for resignation. I’m one of those people who says you know what, that’s the easy way out. You hang around and answer these questions.”

Chairman Mike Johnson has called on Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle to resign. Other Republicans have called for her to be fired.

The Secret Service’s top chief will be heard by the Oversight Committee on Monday.

Emmer said the shooting brought about a sense of unity he had never seen before at a convention.

“It’s been great in this place. You know, the president asked me the other night when I was sitting with him, he said, ‘Do you think this is the best convention ever? And you know, actually, without flattery?'”

“Yes,” I told him, “said Emmer.

“I think what happened on Saturday really galvanized us.”

“You saw Nikki Haley, you saw Ron DeSantis when I saw them when they wanted to shoot a man, they wanted to kill a man for what he believes in, what he fights for. Time to unite and understand that this is much, much bigger than us.”

Former UN Ambassador Haley and Governor DeSantis received a warm embrace from the audience earlier this week when they took the stage — with only minor boos.

Despite being Trump’s former biggest opponents, they emphasized why Republicans must unite behind him — even those who don’t agree with him on everything.
