Tom Cruise reveals why he performed the daring Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One motorcycle stunt on the first day of filming: ‘I was training and I was ready’

Tom Cruise explains why he and Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One director Christopher McQuarrie were the first to film the movie’s most dangerous sequence.

In the scene, Cruise, 60, is seen riding a motorcycle off a cliff before activating a parachute that lands him safely on the ground as the bike crashes.

Cruise, who is on the promotion path for the summer blockbuster, explained Entertainment tonight that the rationale in filming the dangerous stunt was first to make sure that if he got hurt, the $200 million movie wouldn’t be shut down from the start.

“Well, we know if we’re going to continue with the movie or not — let’s know on day one!” Cruise, who plays Ethan Hunt in the action movie franchise, told the outlet.

The veteran Hollywood star continued, “Let’s find out on day one what’s going to happen: are we all going through or is it a big rewrite?”

The showbiz veteran previously injured his ankle during the production of Mission: Impossible 6, which affected filming.

The A-list actor said he was intensely focused on the motorcycle cinematic sequence, which demands the utmost physical precision.

“I was training and I was ready,” Cruise said. “You have to be razor sharp when you do something like that.

“It was really important when we were preparing the movie that it was actually the first thing. I don’t want to drop that and shoot other things and have my mind elsewhere.’

He added of the mindset going into filming it, “Everyone was prepared — let’s just get it done.”

Cruise said capturing the moment was a cross-section of his own prior experience with stunts and the innovations of the filmmakers he worked with on the film.

The director of the film, Christopher McQuarrie, said this earlier this month rich magazine that started filming with the dangerous stunt set the tone for the production.

“Doing that on the first day gave us all the time in the world to understand why him [Ethan] did what he did,” he said. “If we sat down and tried to sort these movies out the old-fashioned way, you’d never find them, simply because it’s such a living, breathing thing.”
