Tom Brady met the Birmingham City football team for the first time in the dressing room before recording a 1-0 victory over Leeds United on Saturday with a 90th-minute penalty.

Brady, who announced on his 46th birthday last week that he had become a minority investor in the second-tier England team, flew to England to watch his team play their first home game of the new season this weekend.

And he looked to be a good omen of luck, with Lukas Jutkiewicz scoring a penalty in the last minute of the match to seal a victory for Brady at St Andrew’s stadium.

Brady spoke of his excitement in England after the game, but it was Birmingham coach John Eustace who revealed just how far the seven-time Super Bowl winner’s influence already extends.

“The owners came into the dressing room just as I came out and congratulated the boys,” Blues boss Eustace said. “It’s great to see Tom Brady there too. Tom spoke to the group for our meeting today, so it’s great that one of the most famous athletes in the world is coming down to chat with the group.

“They were all very excited to listen to him and he gave us really good advice.

“I think you can see his presence at the club today (is an advantage), the vision he has for the football club is great.

“He wants this football club to be a global brand, he wants this Birmingham City family to go all over the world now, and that’s what we all want.”

Brady himself spoke to the English football media after the game about how he sees the future of the Birmingham team.

“It was a great day,” Brady told ITV Football. “Obviously I won the game but given the experience of the fans and to see for this home game and to see all the renovations that Tom (Wagner – Birmingham chairman) and his team have put together and done, it was very exciting.

“Things have been fast and furious, but it was a great experience today. And hopefully this is the beginning of a very long-lasting meaningful impact on this community and sports fans around the world.”

He continued: ‘For me I’m a fan of sports, I’ve been playing sports since I was a kid and I’ve also been a big fan of your version of football for a very long time.

‘It’s a global sport, I’ve been following it with great pleasure for a long time. Family was involved over a long period of time, so when Tom (Wagner) offered me the chance, it was a no-brainer for me.’

Wagner went on to say that Brady’s involvement with the team is much more meaningful than just a publicity stunt to add a high-profile celebrity to the ownership.

Tom is actively involved in the operations on the sporting side of the team, he will play a significant role. And the other champion team fans would probably wish it was a publicity stunt,” Wagner said.

Unfortunately for them, it’s much more than that. I think others will take much more of what Tom (Brady) has done and proven to be successful in American football and I think this is a great platform for Tom to get his message out.”

Brady celebrated by posting “touchdown” with a photo of Jutkiewicz celebrating the game-winning goal with his arms in the air as if to signal a touchdown on the gridiron.

Before the game, Brady visited fans at a local pub before kick-off to greet some of the fans.

“I haven’t been to a pub in a very, very long time,” Brady joked to the BBC. ‘If I had spent a lot of evenings in the pub I wouldn’t have been a great player! But to have that experience was very memorable.”

He announced his surprise involvement last week, admitting he still has a lot to learn about the “different football”, but he clearly takes his new commitments seriously.
