TOM BOWER: Palace must hit back… if it wants to win over the under thirties

>

Battered by Prince Harry’s relentless barrage of poisonous spite, King Charles and Prince William have so far decided that silence is their only dignified response.

Following the Buckingham Palace maxim of ‘Never complain, never explain’, her courtiers insist that the best response to the torrent of hurtful revelations and vitriol is to say nothing.

The royal family, these advisers argue, can stay safe by staying out on the moral high ground. Refusal to join the slander will be rewarded with public support.

This strategy stems from the belief that the overwhelming condemnation of Harry’s book by the British media accurately reflects the state of mind of all Britons, and that Harry’s serial betrayal has caused only superficial reputational damage. country world.

However, I believe that Charles, William and these advisors are making a terrible mistake.

The harsh truth is that Harry has inflicted colossal damage on the Royal Family’s reputation for decency and probity.

Continuing to remain silent also risks forever alienating the sizeable minority, especially those under 30, who are sympathetic to the Sussexes. Though unprecedented, William should make an elaborate televised statement to regain the initiative.

But he faces a tall task at a time when social media tries to dictate public opinion and when there is a powerful narrative that Harry is the “victim” of an uncaring father, a hostile older brother and a “dangerous” stepmother.

Add in the notion that Meghan suffered from racism from the Royal Family, and there’s the added challenge of protecting Britain’s reputation in countries that have majority Black populations.

Until now, the ruthless Sussexes have amassed a multi-million dollar fortune knowing that the Royal Family would remain a sad, mute punching bag.

That silence must end now.

Once Harry’s whining-fest circus hits full throttle, William should make a dignified statement.

After emphasizing her love for her brother and reminding the world how warmly Meghan was received by the British, and especially by royals, she must explain that memories differ.

I would have to say that Meghan’s expectations of starring in a global celebrity campaign, using the British royal family as a platform, could never be met. The sole purpose of the Royal Family is to serve the British and the Commonwealth. Historically, there is only one star: the monarch.

At the heart of the statement should be an expression of sadness that Harry has lost faith in his family.

Harry is a troubled man. His psychological problems appear to have festered despite years of therapy, and many have pointed out that they may have been aggravated by his confessed drug use.

Harry’s use of narcotics did not alarm Meghan or her mother Doria. As I found out while researching my Meghan bio, Harry has been a frequent user of cannabis in California, where the drug is legal. Significantly, Meghan gave a bag of cannabis to each of the 105 guests at her first wedding in Jamaica in 2011.

Despite the Duchess’s famous views on social issues, she has never condemned smoking marijuana, despite its harmful effects.

Certainly any statement by William would not address the possibility that Harry’s wrecking ball behavior is related to the use of cocaine, ketamine, weed and Nepalese hashish which he has admitted in his memoirs.

Nor would it address the question of whether Meghan was ever willing to serve Britain as a loyal and discreet member of the royal family. In fact, the couple’s wedding guest list, which excluded her family except her mother and included Hollywood celebrities she barely knew, showed her inordinate personal ambition.

But as the heir to the throne and the man likely to lead the monarchy into the second half of the century, William must challenge the already flawed credibility of the Sussexes. Otherwise, these problems could prove fatal for the Royal Family.

The sooner William speaks and sets the record straight, the sooner he can save the reputation of his family and Britain. It would also be a critical move to help shut down the Sussexes’ dirty money-making machine.
