Old Bar Rugby Union Club: Toddler is crushed to death by a common piece of sporting equipment

A two-year-old boy has died after being crushed by sports equipment at a sports club on the NSW Mid North Coast.

The toddler and his father were at the Old Bar Rugby Union Club in Old Bar, 200 miles north of Sydney, about 2pm on Sunday.

A rugby srum machine, a heavy piece of equipment used to practice scrumming, fell on the child and hit him.

The father desperately tried to save his son and called for help.

Bystanders who came to his aid assisted with CPR.

But the boy suffered significant injuries and died a short time later.

As a tribute to the toddler, red flowers were laid at the club.

A report is being prepared for the coroner and police are investigating how the tragedy happened.

The case is being treated as an accident and not as a criminal investigation.
