Today on Sky Sports Racing: Former Group Three star Military March returns from huge absence at Newcastle

After a mammoth 999 days away from the track, former Group Three and 2000 Guineas fourth Military March winner returns to action for Saeed bin Suroor in Newcastle on Tuesday, live on Sky Sports Racing.

4.55 Newcastle – Military march attempts to overcome prolonged absence

A relatively quiet Tuesday evening card at Gosforth Park is set ablaze by the presence of the Group Three winner Military march, returning from a massive 999 days off orbit in the BetUK. It is where Great Britain sets a handicap (4.55).

After his last participation in Meydan in January 2021, the now six-year-old Saeed bin Suroor has been neutered since that run in Group Two.

Braving a layoff of such length will be no easy task, as only eleven horses have been able to overcome a period of more than a thousand days off the track in the last twenty years.

The former Derby hopeful will take on 11 rivals, including recent winners Capital theory And Wynter Wildes to the bottom of the weights.

The latter maintains her partnership with young apprentice rider Mikkel Mortensen, under whom she is three out of three after the recent course and distance victory.

Harry Charlton will soon take over from father Roger on the Beckhampton license and the pair will run Valsad here, back on all-weather after a great last of seven finish at Newbury. The heavy surface that day may have been the cause and the four-year-old was now able to bounce back to synthetics, on which he won his only start.

4.20 Newcastle – Crisford runner Oh So Grand takes on 11 rivals

The opening BetUK. Home of the Acca-Fenwa Handicap (4.20) looks a competitive affair but could offer Simon and Ed Crisford’s Oh so grand with a third career victory.

She will be Jack Mitchell’s mount and could benefit from a return to the all-weather championship after her dominant six-length win at Wolverhampton in July.

Several of her rivals arrive out of form and looking for answers, especially the potentially well-handled pair White feathers fall And Cancan In The Rain.

Both go for trainer Charlie Johnston and while the former is a prime prospect, it could be the three-year-old stablemate who is the most interesting under Oisin Murphy. As a half-brother to a 10-furlong winner with stamina on his mother’s side, he looks unremarkable at this distance.

3.35 Hereford – Classic Concorde goes for four-timers

The jumps at Hereford could well be the main story Classic Concorde and his attempt to complete a four-timer in the Best prices guaranteed every day at Vickers.Bet Handicap Hurdle (3.35).

The 10-year-old is clearly doing well but must brave his top weight and a 3lb increase for his latest success in Bangor-on-Dee.

Among those looking to spoil the party is the in-form stable of Nigel Twiston-Davies That’s fine with me. With Twiston-Davies currently boasting a 41 per cent success rate, every rider from his Gloucestershire stable is worth a second look and although the six-year-old gelding needs to recover from a poor run on September 1, he is worthy of much respect.
