“I was part of our “booze culture.” Was I an alcoholic? No. Did I tend to become one? Yes. Very much,” he wrote in an April 2015 editorial for The Daily Telegraph.
“There is addiction on both sides of my family and I was standing in the doorway of a very dark room.”
David is the son of legendary rocker Jimmy Barnes, who is open about his own problems with alcohol.
“My father has, you could say, a reputation as the hardest partying rock star Australia has produced,” he wrote.
As he told me on the phone today, “I should have put you off the booze.” But it didn’t. It had more or less the opposite effect.’

“I grew up with that,” he said The Father Cap in 2019.
“I saw my father struggle with addiction and I also saw how devastating an impact that can have on children, and on me, due to alcohol-related incidents in my family.”
He added, “I knew this wasn’t the way to age. You don’t want to endanger a child with that.’
