David Campbell has revealed the fateful day he decided to quit drinking for good.
The Today Extra host said he was given some Crystal Head vodka by legendary actor Dan Aykroyd and drank it at home.
In the morning, the 50-year-old was sick – and he was ashamed that his son Leo, who was then three, saw this.
“I heard Leo say, ‘Oh, daddy isn’t doing well.’ I hug the porcelain bowl and in your head you think: no, no, no, I don’t want to be sick. He can’t see this. He cannot register this as core memory,” says David Stellar.
He had a flight to catch and afterward David told his wife he was done with alcohol – and he never looked back.

‘I got on a plane to Broome and when we went to lunch I said, ‘I’m not going to drink anymore.’
‘I felt like I was bored by drinking. Suddenly it wasn’t fun anymore and it was playing on my mind.’
David is about to celebrate ten years since his last drink.
The TV presenter marked the milestone last year by sharing a rare photo on Instagram from the moment he decided to give up alcohol.
‘I felt like I was bored by drinking. Suddenly it wasn’t fun anymore and it was playing on my mind,” he said
‘Nine years sober this week. I was in Broome with my wife and son (pre-twins). This cheerful photo of me is from back then, when I made the decision. I’m still happy,” he wrote at the time.
‘Like a weight has been lifted from my shoulders (and liver). Stay strong. If you’re having a hard time, get help.’
David is dad to son Leo, 12, and twins Betty and Billy, nine, who he shares with his wife of 15 years, Lisa Hewitt.
To mark his eight-year anniversary of sobriety in April 2022, David tweeted that ditching booze had been the “best decision I made.”
“This week I have been sober for eight years. The best decision I made for myself, my family and my mental health,” he tweeted.
He ended his post with some words of encouragement for others who may be struggling with something similar: “If you think about it, just know that it’s wonderful.”
