The Reserve Bank of India last month directed banks and non-banking financial companies to set aside more capital for risk weights. The central bank was concerned about the recent increase in unsecured personal loans. And now top lenders have asked their fintech partners to limit the issuance of small personal loans. Paytm has already announced its plan to slow down on loans below Rs 50,000. Is this the end of small private loans?
The central bank has meanwhile said that inflation could rise sharply in November and December. The government also seems cautious. The list of food products facing export restrictions is growing as the general election approaches. Export restrictions on one of the products on the list, namely sugar, were extended last week beyond October 31. No reason was given. At the same time, the government has also directed sugar mills not to use sugarcane juice or syrup for making ethanol this year. Find out if it's a good idea in today's special segment.
