A Complete Unknown is based on the book Dylan Goes Electric! by Elijah Wald. Newport, Seeger, Dylan, and the Night That Split the Sixties, originally published 2015.

The feature film will focus on a younger version of the Hurricane singer as he grows as an artist during the early days of his career.

The 82-year-old performer’s unexpected switch to electrically amplified sound and the subsequent controversy are also discussed in the film.

Development of the project was initially revealed to the public in January 2020, when it was revealed that Chalamet had signed on to star in the film.

In addition to leading the feature film’s cast, the Call Me By Your Name star also serves as one of the project’s producers.

At the same time, it was announced that James Mangold, who co-wrote the film script with Jay Cocks, would direct the film.

A Complete Unknown will also feature the talents of an ensemble cast including Elle Fanning, Nick Offerman and Edward Norton.

Although filming was initially scheduled to begin last year, production was postponed due to the outbreak of the entertainment industry strikes in 2023.

Mangold spoke about A Complete Unknown during an interview with IndieWirewhere he revealed that he personally consulted Dylan while working on the film.

‘I spent several wonderfully charming days in his company, just one on one, talking to him. “I have a script that is personally annotated by him and cherished by me,” he said.

The filmmaker further stated that he felt Dylan’s move to electrified music had contemporary implications.

“It all has enormous relevance even now because of the way we’re all so tribal with rules about what our music should be, about what our rules are, how we speak, how we express ourselves,” he stated.
